South Korean President Moon Jae-in warns of a “crisis” if North Korea decides to conduct more missile tests with long-range missiles. The announcement comes after a record month in which North Korea conducted seven missile tests.
Any attempt by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to experiment with long-range missiles again, Moon said, will “undue years of efforts and peace talks”. This will allow the Korean peninsula, in his view, to “relapse immediately into the crisis situation of five years ago”.
The Jong-un regime has been causing international unrest for years by working on advanced weapons. Former US President Donald Trump tried to negotiate with Kim, but that did not lead to a breakthrough. Moon calls that “very regrettable”.
He expects current US President Joe Biden to meet with the North Korean leader after all. “It’s only a matter of time,” said Moon.
Moon, who regularly held peace talks with North Korea during his five-year term, will resign from office in May. A successor will be chosen early next month.
