Roger Federer will not make an appearance at the Olympics later this month. The 39-year-old Swiss tennis legend is again suffering from a knee injury, he announced via social media.
“Unfortunately, during the grass season, I had a relapse with my knee, and therefore, I have to withdraw from the Tokyo Games,” writes Federer. “I have already started my recovery and hope to return later in the summer.”
Federer, who was recently knocked out in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games; in doubles with Stan Wawrinka.
Four years later, he took silver in singles; he then lost in London in the final to Scotsman Andy Murray. Federer also withdrew from the 2016 Games.
