The new European political consultation forum of 44 countries is “an opportunity to restore peace in Europe”, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He said this in a video speech addressed to the leaders of all European countries gathered in Prague to discuss, among other things, the war in Ukraine and its consequences. “I urge you to make the fundamental decision to become the leaders of peace.”
“This war must be won in Ukraine so that other countries are not hit,” said Zelensky, who sent his prime minister to the one-day meeting. Zelensky pointed out that Russia wants to redraw the borders and that the country is “anti-European”. “By helping us, you help yourself.”
The new European Political Community brings together EU countries and their neighbours, including countries that do not take Ukraine’s side, if at all. Turkey and Serbia, among others, refuse to impose the same sanctions on Russia as the EU and its Western allies. Zelensky called on all leaders present to “punish the aggressor” with sanctions.
