US forces are preparing to hand over their main base in Afghanistan. An insider says the handover of Bagram Air Force Base is expected in about 20 days.

The United States and other NATO countries had stationed tens of thousands of troops on the massive base over the past two decades. There is also a prison where members of the Taliban and other extremist groups have been held.

The US military is leaving Afghanistan this year and has already transferred several bases, including the large base near Kandahar. The source, an Afghan security official, says special committees have been set up to manage Bagram’s transfer.

Meanwhile, the battle between Afghan security forces and the Taliban continues. The Afghan government and the jihadist guerrillas have been negotiating peace in Qatar since September, but the talks are progressing with difficulty.
