UN: Trustworthy Reports of Taliban Executions
UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet reported that the United Nations had received reliable reports of Taliban executions in Afghanistan. The UN has also had reports of the curtailment of women’s rights and the suppression of protests against the Taliban.
Bachelet asks the UN Human Rights Council to monitor the Taliban closely. The council held an emergency meeting on Tuesday about the situation in Afghanistan. Bachelet asks the Taliban to live up to their statements about the position of women under their new regime.
Shortly after taking power, the radical Islamist group said that women could continue to go to school or work and not necessarily have to wear a burqa. Yet, even when that promise was made, stories came from several Afghan areas where women were no longer allowed to work and no longer allowed on the street alone.
The European Union has announced that it will increase emergency aid for Afghanistan from EUR 50 million to EUR 200 million. This is in addition to contributions from EU member states, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported on Twitter.
Later in the day, during the G7 summit, the emergency aid will be officially announced. However, aid would depend on how human and women’s rights are respected in Afghanistan.
