US President Donald Trump congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his victory in the parliamentary elections. Netanyahu’s victory increases the chances of peace in the Middle East, Trump said.
The right-wing camp of Netanyahu, together with the religious parties, has a majority of 65 out of 120 seats after counting almost all votes.
That is why it can be said with certainty that the 69-year-old conservative politician will be charged with government formation. That will be his fifth term in office.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Trump in Washington two weeks before the poll. On that occasion, the US President recognised the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as Israeli territory.
At the same time, Trump had announced that after the elections he would present his long-awaited peace plan for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
