Sources: US Wants More Cooperation With EU on Sanctions Against China

The United States is in talks with the European Union to also cooperate more in the area of sanctions against China.

For example, the administration of President Joe Biden wants to use the information exchange and enforcement processes to thwart the Asian superpower further; insiders told financial news agency Bloomberg.

That should be discussed further at a trade forum with senior EU and US representatives in early December. However, several European countries are not eager to turn this meeting into an anti-China occasion. Still, they want to focus more on cooperation with the US on digital infrastructure, among other things.

For example, the Netherlands has previously expressed its concerns about strict US export bans against China, especially in the field of chips. The Veldhoven chip machine maker ASML is an important player in this field. But there are certainly proponents of more restrictions against China. For example, concerns can be heard in Germany that China is increasingly becoming an enemy rather than a partner or competitor.

A US government spokesman denied the plans. According to the EU, introducing the same sanctions against China as against Russia is now out of the question because the situation is different. Instead, export bans to Russia, introduced after the invasion of Ukraine, are seen as one of the more effective measures to hit the country.
