Sleeping Tesla Driver Charged in Canada

In Canada, a Tesla driver has been charged with dangerous driving after falling asleep on a highway with the autopilot on. The self-driving car also drove too fast, the police reported.

The incident happened near the village of Ponoka in Alberta province.

“The car appeared to be self-driving, going more than 140 kilometres per hour with both front seats fully reclined and the occupants seemed to be asleep,” local police said. The speed limit was 110 kilometres per hour.

According to broadcaster CBC, a 20-year-old driver has been charged.

Autopilot allows a Tesla to steer, accelerate and brake independently on public roads, but Tesla warns that the driver must always pay attention.

Earlier this week in the US, a driver of a self-driving Uber car was charged in a fatal accident in the state of Arizona in 2018.

He was not paying attention, according to prosecutors, when a woman crossed the road in the dark.
