Samsung Claims Unprecedented Popularity Foldables, But Keeps Silent About Numbers
Samsung’s new foldable smartphones are pre-ordered 44 percent more than the previous generation. But the company is consistently silent about real numbers.
Two weeks ago, Samsung presented its new generation of foldable. The Galaxy Z Flip4 and the Galaz Z Fold4. In a press release, not coincidentally just before the start of sales, Samsung speaks of an ‘unprecedented popularity,’ with the devices ordered 44 percent more in Belgium than in 2021.
But you can interpret the word ‘unprecedented’ very literally because Samsung does not say how many devices have been ordered in advance. So that could be ten, that could be ten thousand. Samsung did the same last year when it claimed that 5.3 times more foldable were sold than in 2020, but in the absence of concrete figures, we only know that at least 53 devices have been sold.
Samsung says more than sixty percent of the presale of the Z Flip4 is the cheapest device of the two, with 1,099 euros. The Galaxy Z Fold4 accounts for the other forty percent.
Exactly how many foldable phones are sold remains unknown. The only figure that is more or less concrete is that almost ten million copies were sold worldwide in 2021. That figure was shared at the time by TM Roh, head of Samsung’s MX business.
