The Russian army says it took full control of the port of Mariupol on Thursday. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the remaining Ukrainian soldiers in the city are said to have been surrounded. Ukraine has not confirmed this.
Fierce fighting has been going on in Mariupol for weeks.
The city is of strategic importance to Russia as it provides a land link between the separatist areas in the Donbas region and the annexed Crimean peninsula.
Mariupol citizens will be able to leave the city on Thursday by their own transport via an agreed evacuation route. Thousands of people have already fled the city.
The people who still live there barely have water, food or electricity.
