Russia has registered a record number of 28,782 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, taking the total sum of infections to 2,431,731.
According to authorities, 508 deaths related to Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day, bringing the official national death toll to 42,684.
In Moscow, 7993, people became infected with the virus. Vaccination centres will open in the Russian capital on Saturday.
The first people to be vaccinated are teachers and people who work in the healthcare sector. Russia is the first country to vaccinate against the coronavirus on a large scale.
Scientists have expressed concern about the speed at which Russia is launching its own vaccine. Sputnik V has not yet been thoroughly tested for safety and efficacy.
Russia is the fourth country with the most infections worldwide, after the United States, India and Brazil.
