Record Number of New Corona Infections in South Korea

67

South Korea registered 1030 new corona infections on Sunday, which is a record. The Asian country has massive difficulty in curbing the third wave.

In recent months, there has been regular praise for the way South Koreans tackled the virus. The emphasis was on testing and detection and keeping a sufficient distance.

But a resurgence of the virus in Seoul and the surrounding area has taken the country by surprise in recent weeks. President Moon Jae-in has even apologized.

On Saturday he spoke of a “dire” situation. At that time, there were already 950 new infections, which was also a record since the start of the pandemic.

The sudden increase in the number of new cases comes after a few days with between 500 and 600 infections. Since last week, stricter rules have applied in Seoul, the most affected region.

A maximum of 50 people are still welcome at sporting events, cafes can only sell drinks to take away, and the restaurants must close at 9 p.m.
