Prosecutors in New York have set a deadline for the Trump Organization. Lawyers for the Trump family’s company have until Monday afternoon to explain why the prosecution has to waive a criminal case because of financial abuses; insiders tell The Washington Post.
Justice would have looked into whether the company has provided misleading information about the real estate value. For example, lenders and the tax authorities may have been misled. Prosecutors also wanted to know whether taxes were paid on certain managerial schemes.
Sources say they are considering prosecuting the company itself, but prosecutors would also have financial chief Allen Weisselberg in their sights. He refused to cooperate with the investigation. The newspaper writes that it cannot be ruled out that it will ultimately not be prosecuted.
Lawyers for former President Donald Trump and the company are said to have spoken virtually with prosecutors last Thursday. They argued at the time that there is no reason to bring criminal charges. It is unclear how closely Trump himself is still involved in the administration of the Trump Organization.
Trump left the White House earlier this year but has not yet left the political scene. He held another major rally in Ohio last weekend for the first time since his presidency. His successor, Joe Biden, received the full blow and frenzied supporters chanted “four more years”.
