The New York Times newspaper announced on Wednesday that the Hong Kong office will be moved to the South Korean capital, Seoul, as a result of the national security law that China has enacted in the city.
“China ‘s far-reaching new national security law in Hong Kong is creating a great deal of uncertainty about what the new rules will affect our activities and our journalism,” staff executives write, the newspaper’ s website reported.
“We think it is wise to make these plans and start shifting our writing staff across the region.”
It is the first announcement of a chief move by an international news organization since China imposed strict security laws on Hong Kong last month.
The New York Times has been headquartered in Hong Kong for decades.
