The new variant of the coronavirus that has emerged in the United Kingdom has quickly become the most common variant in London and the East of England.

The British statistics agency ONS has calculated that the new mutation on December 9 already accounted for 62 percent of all new corona infections in the British capital.

In East England, this accounted for 59 percent of all cases discovered on that date.

The numbers show how quickly the mutated version of the virus is spreading. On November 18, this corona variant, which first appeared in England in September, accounted for only 28 percent of the reported cases in London.

Mutations of a virus are more common. They are often not directly problematic, which is why no immediate action was taken when the variant was found in laboratories.
