Nagorno-Karabakh Separatist Leader Arrested
Azerbaijan arrested Ruben Vardanyan at a border post on Wednesday. He headed the separatist government in Nagorno-Karabakh from November last year to February. Baku reported this on Wednesday.
Businessman Vardanyan was arrested when, according to the Azeris, he tried to enter neighbouring Armenia. “He has been handed over to the competent authorities,” the Azerbaijani Border Guard said in a press release.
The United States and Germany already called on the regime in Baku to allow international observers into Nagorno-Karabakh. The UN has already asked Azerbaijan to protect civilians, including those the Azeris hold.
More than 42,000 Armenians have fled the region since Azerbaijan invaded Nagorno-Karabakh last week.
