Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing says deposed head of government Aung San Suu Kyi is home and in good health. He also confirms that she will be tried in court in a few days.
The junta leader made his statements in his first interview since the February 1 coup. Suu Kyi has not been seen in public since then. She has attended the hearings in her trial via video link and had limited contact with her lawyers. She will come to court for the first time on Monday.
The politician is being prosecuted for, among other things, violating the corona rules during her election campaign and sharing state information. The military impeached her government following unproven allegations of electoral fraud. The National League for Democracy (NLD) party had secured an overwhelming majority of the votes in November. There are threats to dissolve the NLD.
Myanmar has entered into a crisis after the coup. At least 812 people have been killed and 4,000 arrested, a local human rights organization reports. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced because of clashes between the military and armed ethnic groups. The democratically elected representatives of the people united in a shadow government a month ago. According to the junta, new elections will take place within two years.
