Mozilla Wants to Expand

According to its statement, the Mozilla Foundation, the organization behind the Firefox browser, will adjust and expand the composition of its board and diversify its portfolio.

But first, leadership is being expanded. All the top people from the various departments are coming together to form a newly formed Mozilla Leadership Council. “The goal of this group is to better coordinate the work across our organization,” writes Mark Surman, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation, in a blog post.

The existing boards of the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, the Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla.ai will each get an additional seat. With these additional directors, he writes that Surman wants to brave ‘difficult financial times shortly’.

He also wants to do this by expanding Mozilla’s portfolio. Firefox will remain the core of the organization, but Mozilla wants to invest in ‘privacy-friendly advertising and the development of open-source AI’. New funding campaigns will also be launched to pay for all of this.

The Mozilla Foundation is experiencing a rough patch. In November, the group had to lay off a third of its staff.
