British Secretary of State Michael Gove (Cabinet Affairs) has “formally confirmed” to the European Commission that London is not requesting an extension of the transitional period for Brexit.
He said this to Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič during an online consultation on the British’s withdrawal from the EU.
Šefčovič said the statement would be a final no to more extended negotiations on the future relationship between London and Brussels.
The British can still change their minds until 1 July, but according to the EU Commissioner, the message could not be more precise.
The Withdrawal Treaty, not to be confused with the agreement on the future relationship, includes agreements on the rights of EU citizens living in England.
Also the British living in the EU after the end of the transitional period on 31 December this year, and about customs control on goods entering the EU country of Ireland from the (British) Northern Ireland.
According to Šefčovič, speed must now be put in place to implement all these agreements before 1 January.
