Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died Friday after he was shot while speaking at a public rally in the city of Nara. NHK reports this on Friday. The shooter, who said he acted out of dissatisfaction, has been arrested.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died after being shot and killed during a campaign rally in the western Japanese city of Nara. Japanese media had previously reported that Abe showed no sign of life when he was taken to the hospital. Kishida also said he is “praying that Abe survives.”

“It is a barbaric act in the full election that forms the basis of democracy, and it is unforgivable,” it said.

The motive for the attack is not yet clear, he said. According to Japanese media, a former soldier is behind the attack. He would have acted out of dissatisfaction, according to the NHK channel. The 41-year-old man is said to have said after his arrest that he was “dissatisfied” with Abe and had wanted to “kill” him.

NHK previously reported that the suspected perpetrator is a former member of the self-defence forces, the country’s army, and that he was a member of the navy until 2005. He would live near where the shooting incident took place. Japanese police have already searched the home of the man suspected of shooting Abe on Friday.
