Prices in the euro countries rose less sharply in June than in the previous month. This is mainly because gas and electricity were cheaper than a year earlier.
Food, alcohol and tobacco prices continued to rise sharply.
Inflation was 5.5 percent in June, European statistics agency Eurostat reports based on an initial estimate. In May, prices in the eurozone rose on average by 6.1 percent.
Prices went up considerably in 2022. The Russian invasion of Ukraine made gas, oil and other commodities more expensive. Even now, inflation is still well above the target of the European Central Bank, which is tackling the strong price rises with interest rate hikes.
Inflation also decreased in the Netherlands. According to the European measurement method, daily life here became 6.4 percent more expensive compared to June 2022. In May, this was still 6.8 percent. Prices fell on average by half a percent between May and June, Eurostat reports.
