Huawei can Buy Car Chips from US

The US has approved a license that allows Huawei to purchase chips for cars in the US. This is remarkable given that the company has been subject to sanctions for years.

News of such licenses has not yet been formally confirmed. Still, according to two Reuters sources, the application has been approved, and Huawei is allowed to purchase hundreds of millions of dollars in chips.

But they are not chips for smartphones or telecom equipment but for car parts. They are a lot less high-tech and would therefore pose less of a risk to the security of the US. So it doesn’t seem like this is a thaw in the relationships for the time being.

Since the US sanctions, Huawei has been looking for markets where it is less subject to those sanctions. This includes video screens and sensors in cars.

However, in the US itself, allowing something to Huawei remains a sensitive political topic.
