Google is Working on its Own Processors for Chromebooks
Google wants to design its own chips, based on Arm models, for future laptops and tablets.
The devices should be released in 2023, the newspaper Nikkei Asia writes. With the move to develop its own processors for its Chromebooks, Google is joining a broader trend. At the end of last year, Apple launched notebooks based on its own processor, the Silicon M1.
Although Google has also been working on its own chips for a while, the tech giant previously indicated that it would design its own system-on-chips for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones, called Tensor.
It’s built from third-party CPUs and GPU designs, which Google licenses from third parties and supplements with features from its own AI department.
The chips for the Chromebooks are also said to be based on existing designs, specifically from chip developer Arm. These will probably also be expanded with own AI functions that should make the hardware faster for specific tasks.
