Cuban Baseball Players No Longer have to Flee to Play in the US

Promising Cuban baseball players who want to earn millions in the US do not have to flee anymore. From now on they can sign a contract with American teams with the consent of Havana.

A historic agreement must also prevent Cuban baseball players from evading during foreign trips.

The agreement was signed after three years of negotiation between the major US baseball organisation, the Major League Baseball (MLB), and the Cuban baseball federation.

The deal is again proof of the improvement of the decades-long, complicated relationship. This was initiated under the Obama administration.

Talented Cuban baseball players who wanted to compete in the American league had until now mainly relied on smugglers who brought them to Florida. Since 2014, when President Obama paid a historic visit to Cuba, over three hundred baseball players have fled the island to seek their luck in the US.
