Cold Wave Kills More Than 160 in Afghanistan
In Afghanistan, at least 166 people have already died in the cold wave that has been hitting the country for about twenty days. That says the Ministry of Disaster Relief on Saturday.
It has been bitterly cold in some areas of Afghanistan since January 10. The thermometer dropped to -33 degrees in certain places.
The freezing cold occasionally accompanies snowfall and rain, while the electricity network fails regularly.
Aid organizations had warned of the impact of this storm. In Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, half of its population of 38 million is at risk of famine, and nearly 4 million children are affected by malnutrition.
The deaths occurred in floods, fires or gas leaks. Some 80,000 head of cattle would also have died.
