All 9 million residents of the Chinese city of Changchun have to go into lockdown due to an increasing number of corona infections.
The measure came into effect on Friday when China reported more than a thousand new infections for the first time in two years.
In Changchun, where there is a lot of industry, one person per household is allowed to go outside every two days to get food and other necessities. There is a home working obligation, except for people involved in the fight against the coronavirus. The population is tested three times for the coronavirus.
Changchun is the capital of Jilin Province, which borders Russia and North Korea. Authorities previously ordered the construction of three 1,200-bed hospitals due to an outbreak. Elsewhere in China, strict measures are still being taken against the lung virus. In Shanghai, primary and secondary education are no longer given physical lessons.
China is not only trying to suppress outbreaks with a strict corona policy but is also committed to a high vaccination rate. Nearly 90 percent of the 1.4 billion Chinese have now been fully vaccinated with one of the corona vaccines developed in China itself. More than a third also had a booster shot.
