China has imposed sanctions on four US officials in response to US sanctions against Chinese government employees.
These are Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, Ambassador for Religious Freedom Sam Brownback and Member of the House of Representatives Chris Smith.
“These sanctions are a response to the wrongdoings of the US. We call on the US to review the wrong decision and stop interfering in domestic Chinese affairs,” said a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Washington last week sanctioned prison camps in northwestern Xinjiang province, where Uyghurs are being detained.
The Uyghurs are an Islamic minority in China. People are being re-educated in the camps, the Chinese government claims.
The US imposed sanctions on July 9 for “the horrific mistreatment” of minorities in China. The US sanctions targeted several senior officials responsible for the prison camps.
