US top politician Nancy Pelosi has pushed China to a partial boycott of the 2022 Olympic Games.
World leaders should stay away from the Beijing sports event because of the human rights situation in the Asian country.
“We cannot pretend that there is nothing wrong with the Games being held in China,” said House Speaker Pelosi. She wants heads of state not to cheer their athletes in Beijing next year because “a genocide is taking place while you sit there in your seats.”
Such calls are bad in China. A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said: “some Americans” are spreading lies and misinformation. “US politicians must stop using the Olympic Movement to play dirty political games.”
Washington and Beijing are at odds over the treatment of the Uyghur minority in China. According to observers, members of this predominantly Muslim population group are being held in large-scale ‘re-education camps.
