Insiders told the Reuters news agency on Monday that the United States is tightening measures against the Chinese chip industry. The measures concern exports to 140 Chinese companies.

However, Reuters reports that companies outside China may also experience the consequences.

The US restrictions include limits on shipments of advanced chips, which can be used for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The US also restricts exports of specific technology and software for chip production.

With these export restrictions, Washington wants to prevent China from using the latest chips for military purposes.

Last week, Bloomberg news agency reported, also based on insiders, that President Joe Biden’s administration was considering new restrictions. According to Bloomberg, the new measures seemed less strict than feared.
