British Ministry of Defence Reports Seven Dead in Kabul Airport
According to the British Ministry of Defence, seven Afghans have been killed in the crowd around Kabul airport since the Taliban took power a week ago. Tens of thousands of people have been trying to flee through the airport for a week for the new rulers.
Several deaths were reported in the attack last week. The Taliban, for example, spoke of at least 12 dead. Bullets also hit some people.
It is not clear what the British Ministry is basing this on. The crowds are mainly outside the area where foreign military, mainly American, are active to make the evacuations possible. The crowd appears to be growing with the approaching deadline the US government has set for completing the operation, August 31.
Desperate Afghans see it as their last chance to get away. But, unfortunately, it is getting more and more challenging to get near the airport because of the crowd that stands in front of the entrance.
However, US President Joe Biden said last week that US troops will remain at the airport if there are still Americans in Afghanistan after August 31. The evacuation of foreigners and Afghans associated with foreign institutions is dependent on the US presence.
