British Prime Minister Boris Johnson thinks it is too early to say whether the last corona restrictions in England can be lifted on June 21.
The end of the lockdown depends, among other things, on whether the current vaccines offer sufficient protection against the so-called Delta variant, which is spreading quickly.
This is still under investigation, the government leader emphasizes. He also points to the increase in the number of corona infections. He wants to take stock on Monday and see to what extent the “phenomenal” vaccination campaign is bearing fruit.
“We’ll see on Monday where we are. I think everyone can see very clearly that the number of cases is increasing and in some cases the number of hospitalizations,” Johnson said.
The government first wants to assess how vaccinations have built up protection among the population. Then we can look at the next phase in phasing out the lockdown.
