British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky more support in a phone call Friday morning.
Zelensky demanded even tougher sanctions against Russia in the conversation. “We demand effective action against Russia,” the president said on Twitter.
What the British support entails has not been disclosed by Johnson’s office. However, on Friday, the government made it clear that no British troops would fight against Russian soldiers. “We are sticking to NATO’s line.”
Speaking to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Zelenski said that not all sanctions against Russia had been deployed yet. “The pressure on Russia must be increased.” He also thanked von der Leyen for the extra financial help.
Zelenski also spoke with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. That country has pledged 50 million euros in aid. “An effective contribution to the coalition against the war,” Zelenski tweeted. “We need to strengthen the Ukrainian defence.”
