American Transgender Allowed to Go to Boys Toilet

An American transgender who went to court because he was not allowed to go to the boys’ bathroom at school won the last year in a legal battle.

The U.S. Supreme Court decided not to hear his case on Monday. As a result, a decision of a lower court remains in force. He agreed with Gavin Grimm, who was born as a girl but who felt like a boy.

The then 15-year-old Grimm was no longer allowed to use the boys’ toilet at his school in the state of Virginia in 2014 but had to go to a gender-neutral toilet. Grimm refused because he found it stigmatizing. According to the previous court decision, this violates anti-discrimination laws.

The Supreme Court was supposed to consider the case in 2017 but dropped out after President Trump broke with the policy of his predecessor Obama by limiting the rights of transgender people again. Obama asked public schools to allow their students to use restrooms and locker rooms according to the gender they identified with.

Transgender rights are an ongoing topic of discussion between progressive and conservative Americans in the United States. The struggle for access to toilets is one of the most sensitive topics.
