A record number of more than 440,000 new corona infections were reported in the United States on Monday, the American health service CDC reported.
Never before have so many infections been registered within 24 hours.
The previous record was set at the beginning of January this year. Then it concerned 294,000 infections. The number of deaths is well below the peak of last winter’s wave of contamination.
The seven-day average is currently around 240,000 confirmed infections per day, slightly less than the January record.
The number of positive corona tests has risen sharply in recent times, partly due to the advance of the extra contagious omikron variant.
