Forest fires on the Spanish holiday island of Gran Canaria have evacuated 2000 people this weekend. More than 1500 hectares of land have since been destroyed. Code orange is set for the area.

Ángel Víctor Torres, the president of the Canary Islands, said this afternoon that the fire would continue to rage for the time being.

That has to do with the high temperatures, low humidity and strong gusts of wind.

At least 250 firefighters were deployed to combat the sea of flames. Nine helicopters and two fire extinguishers also fly continuously above the area.

Last week, forest fires were already raging in the mountains of Gran Canaria. Then about a thousand people were evacuated. The danger zone is very popular with tourists.
