When you build a 180-meter-high dam, how can boats navigate quickly from one side to the other?
By building one of the biggest elevators in the world…
In the province of Hubei, China, a colossal lift was put into operation this week on the Three Gorges dam. This 15,000-tonne concrete building will lift up to six million tons of goods a year.
For this, the cargo ships will take place in a “room” of 120 meters long by 18 meters wide, before being raised to a height of 170 meters.
Time of the ascent: 40 minutes, against three hours previously via the other system of locks present on the dam.
