US President Joe Biden will visit the site in Florida where an apartment complex collapsed last week. Speaking to local officials, he said he expects the government to fully reimburse the costs for the County of Miami-Dade and the State of Florida.
“We are not running away from that, and this is a matter of life and death.”
Biden will speak to rescuers and families of victims. So far, 18 dead have been identified; at least 145 are still missing. It is not known whether they were in the Surfside building near Miami when it partially collapsed.
No one has been found alive under the rubble except shortly after the building collapsed. Work at the crash site was interrupted on Thursday for fear of the further collapse of parts of the complex.
The cause of the collapse of the Champlain Towers South complex is not yet clear. Three years ago, however, an engineer warned of major structural damage to the twelve-storey building.
