US Courts End Planned Restrictions for Tiktok
A US federal judge has overruled planned restrictions that the government wanted to impose on the use of the popular TikTok app in the United States.
In practice, those restrictions would amount to shutting down the app, according to the judge.
It was a case brought by a group of TikTok users who make money with the app. The government restrictions would go into effect on Nov. 12 and prohibit software companies from providing certain services to TikTok in the US.
People can still use the app, but the functionality will deteriorate over time.
The US government has been working on a ban on TikTok for some time. According to the Trump administration, TikTok stores too much data, which ends up with the Chinese government via the Chinese parent company ByteDance.
He demanded that TikTok’s US operations be sold to a US company. In September, he agreed to a deal between ByteDance, Oracle and Walmart that would transfer TikTok’s US operations into a new company.
