Turkey Speaks of Constructive Meeting with Armenia

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Saturday he had a very productive and constructive meeting with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan.

Neighbouring countries are working to rebuild ties after decades of hostility.

Cavusoglu spoke at Mirzoyan’s side after they talked for half an hour during a diplomatic forum in the Turkish resort of Antalya.

Turkey has had no diplomatic or viable ties with Armenia since the 1990s but held meetings in January in a first effort to reestablish ties since a 2009 peace agreement, which was never ratified.

The Ottoman authorities deported and murdered approximately 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1917. US President Joe Biden acknowledged in 2021 that Turkey was guilty of genocide.

This is very sensitive in Turkey, and the country denies that there was any question of targeted genocide.
