The Faster Vaccination Process in Suriname Starts to Work

By adjusting the vaccination process, it is now possible to vaccinate more quickly in Suriname. More specific questions are being asked to vaccinated people, blood pressure is no longer measured, and there is a maximum waiting time of 15 minutes after the vaccination.

According to Rakesh Sukul, the director of the Surinamese Ministry of Health, it is clear from last week’s injection results that the pace is now up. It is one and a half times faster than in recent months, according to Sukul.

The idea for a faster vaccination process came from the Dutch doctor Marc Sprenger. The Dutch government has appointed him as a special corona envoy. According to Sprenger, vaccination is the best way to suppress the corona pandemic in Suriname, he says in conversation with the ANP.

However, the number of injections per day has not increased by the same amount. This is because the Surinamese now know that there will be no shortage of vaccines and that they are in less of a hurry, says Sukul. After all, the Netherlands has promised to send between 500,000 and 750,000 vaccines to Suriname in the near future.

Sprenger was in Suriname last week to see what help the country still needs in the coming period. At the beginning of June, a group of more than twenty doctors, nurses and technicians came to Suriname. The group now consists of about 35 people.

“The intention is that there will always be about 35 people in Suriname to support their Surinamese colleagues. They will remain in Suriname until the number of hospital admissions has normalized,” said Sprenger, who is speaking this week to Health Minister Hugo de Jonge about further aid to the country.
