Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon managed to hack at least one Canadian telecom player earlier this year.
Canada and the FBI are warning that the hacking group, which previously managed to hack US telecom players, also successfully breached at least one Canadian telco in mid-February.
The hack involved manipulating three Cisco routers to subsequently collect data traffic on the network without being noticed. It is not stated which telecom player was involved.
Canada and the FBI note that Salt Typhoon exploits known security vulnerabilities, from routers to firewalls and VPN solutions, abusing them to collect data or gain deeper access to the network.
In October last year, it became known that Salt Typhoon, hackers with ties to the Chinese government, had carried out cyber attacks on American telecom networks. At that time, this included AT&T, Verizon and Lumen.
Earlier this year, a report was published stating that many more telecom networks and universities had been hacked. The TU Delft was also among them, and data centres were also said to have been attacked by the group.
