Social security in the United States is under pressure due to measures taken by DOGE, Elon Musk’s cutbacks task force. The Washington Post reported the problems.
The website of the benefits agency SSA keeps crashing, managers have to work as receptionists themselves due to the exodus of employees, and the office that was supposed to monitor customer experiences has been cut back, according to the newspaper.
The SSA is responsible for the benefits of, among others, retired and disabled Americans, which amount to approximately one and a half trillion dollars annually.
Technical problems have plagued the agency for some time, and measures taken by DOGE add to this. For example, due to a spending freeze, many offices lack pens, paper, and telephone headsets.
