ChatGPT Pro Turns Out to be Loss Making

CEO Sam Altman said that OpenAI is losing money on ChatGPT Pro, the company’s most expensive subscription to its AI service.

In practice, users use the service much more than the company had expected.

The subscription users currently pay $200 per month. “I chose that price,” Altman wrote on X/Twitter, “and I thought we would make a profit.” It turns out that’s not the case.

The subscription upgrades users to the o1 AI model and removes limits on several of OpenAI’s tools, such as the  Sora video generator. At around $2,400 a year, it’s a hefty investment, but the companies that make them appear to be getting the most out of it.

OpenAI has raised around $20 billion in investments in recent years but is not making a profit. The company has lost around $5 billion in the past year.
