Paul Biya Wins Seventh Term Cameroon’s Election as 85 Year Old President. He won the elections with a large majority. The 85-year-old leader received 71 percent of the votes, the Constitutional Council announced on Monday.
That is much more than his rival Maurice Kamto, who claimed victory from his own data but officially came in at just 14 percent.
The board rejected all charges for fraud. According to the opposition, on October 7 there was extensive fraud, varying from already filled in ballots to harassment of voters.
In English-speaking regions, where a separatist movement is strong, many people could not vote because of disturbances.
Biya begins his seventh term of six years. He came to power at the end of 1982. In Africa, only the 76-year-old Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has been in office for longer, since 1979 in Equatorial Guinea
