Washington Punishes Cuba for the Crackdown on Protests

The United States has decided to punish Cuba’s communist regime for its crackdown on recent protests. The government in Washington announced measures against the leadership of the Cuban army and against the department of the Interior Ministry that directs the actions against the demonstrations.

US President Joe Biden said, “this is just the beginning”. The US will continue to punish those responsible for the oppression of the Cuban people, he assured.

Biden “unequivocally condemned the mass detentions and mock trials that unjustly lead to prison terms” of those who dared speak out. He calls this an attempt to intimidate and silence the Cuban people.

He said Cubans have “the same right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly as all people.” The US stands behind the “brave Cubans who have taken to the streets to resist 62 years of repression under a communist regime,” he further stated.

The surprising demonstrations earlier this month, which had not been seen on this scale for a quarter of a century, certainly left one dead. Thousands of people expressed their dissatisfaction with their living conditions and the communist rulers.
