US President-elect Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that he is preparing a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin “to end the war in Ukraine”.
“He wants us to meet; we are working on setting that up,” Trump said before a meeting with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
It is unclear when, where, or how the meeting between Trump and Putin would occur. Trump previously claimed he could end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that Putin would welcome Trump’s desire to reach out but that there was no formal request.
According to Peskov, it would be more appropriate to wait until Trump takes office.
