British Scientists Develop Self-Healing Asphalt Via AI

US President Donald Trump has announced a new artificial intelligence project that will see “at least $500 billion” invested in AI infrastructure, such as data centres, in the United States.

The so-called Stargate project was announced in the White House. It is a joint venture between the American cloud specialist Oracle, AI player OpenAI (the parent company of ChatGPT), and Japanese investor SoftBank. Chip manufacturer Nvidia is also involved.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son specified that 100 billion dollars will be available immediately. In four years, that amount should increase to 500 billion dollars. The first data centres will be built in the state of Texas. According to Trump, Stargate will create “more than 100,000 jobs almost immediately” in the US.

Turnaround
The project marks a turnaround for OpenAI, which has relied on data centres owned by its major shareholder, Microsoft (49 percent), but will also have its data centres in the future.

Also, in the artificial intelligence sector, it was announced this week that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is pumping another billion dollars into AI developer Anthropic. It previously invested $2 billion in that start-up. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees. The company develops generative AI similar to ChatGPT and launched its own AI chatbot with Claude.

Decree withdrawn
Incidentally, the new American president immediately withdrew an executive order from his predecessor, Joe Biden, on tackling AI risks after his appointment. That order required AI developers to share test results with the government before publicising new technology. This prevented AI applications from threatening American national security, the economy, or public health. This obligation will now lapse.
