The Chinese city of Tianjin began mass testing residents for the coronavirus on Saturday after a recent upsurge in the number of infections in the northeast city.

All approximately 3 million residents of the sprawling Binhai New Area district, home to Northern China’s largest port, will undergo testing.

The virus would resurface in the Kanhaixuan neighbourhood of that district.

China reported seven new locally transmitted coronavirus cases on Friday, five in Tianjin and two in Shanghai. Shanghai also reported nine new cases of the virus imported from abroad.

All five cases in Tianjin, as well as three more asymptomatic cases not included in the official results, were associated with Kanhaixuan.
