In the United States, the number of people who have died from the effects of the coronavirus has risen to 110,990, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.
The total number of confirmed cases of infection is approaching 2 million: 1,960,897. The United States has by far the most virus infections and Covid-19 deaths in the world.
Researchers at the University of Washington estimate that the death toll in the United States will rise to more than 145,000 in August.
That estimate is 5000 higher than a few days ago.
The number of victims is growing in 22 of the 50 American states. The increase in the number of cases is particularly substantial in the large states of Florida and Texas.
The virus has killed more than 406,000 people worldwide, and more than 7.1 million people have been infected since it was discovered in China at the end of last year.
