More Than 5 Million Corona Infections Worldwide
The number of registered coronavirus infections has passed the 5 million mark worldwide. A count of news agency Reuters shows this.
Latin America, in particular, is seeing an increase in the number of new infections. Of all new infections reported earlier this week, about a third were from South America.
This has crossed the continent of Europe and the US, both of which accounted for just over 20 percent of new cases.
Brazil is responsible for the majority of South American infections.
According to authorities, the country registered a record number of nearly 20,000 new cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of reported cases to over 291,000.
Only in Russia (more than 308,000) and the US (over 1.5 million), according to official figures, more infections are known.
In Brazil, 18,859 people have died from the coronavirus so far, an increase of 888 from a day earlier.
